The World You Leave Behind (Michael Steele)
Song: Intro + Verse + Chorus + Verse +
Chorus + Bridge + Solo + Chorus
Verse 1
Oh my darkest angel
So fragile and so young
Made a desperate decision
In the hours to come
Chorus
The sun will rise
Twisted trees
Morning sky
And the world you leave behind
Verse 2
Only you can know the torment
Made you hungry for release
And I can't find an answer
That'll bring you peace
Bridge
Here, the skies so indifferent watch over
And I'm burning inside and that's all I know
And I don't know why
The air and sky so indifferent watch over
And what's done cannot be undone
And it makes me cry...
Michael Steele
Song order: The song's Verse 1 and Verse 2 are slightly different, the Chorus is the same throughout.
Intro is repeated 3x, and there seems to be a shorter measure (*3/4) right before the Verse starts.
Verse (8 bars)
Chorus (6 bars), again has that transition *3/4 bar at the end like the intro...
Verse (8 bars) except starts off with Esus4 for a cool variation.
Bridge. Ok. This is where I get into trouble with the bpm of 74. The chords don't measure out well as a pattern, so I think of the [G D *] as either double time or a 2/4 measure. (Hey, I never said I went to music school!)
Solo chords are same as Intro + Verse. See (here) for detailed solo notation. The solo is hard to play (for me at least) on an acoustic w/o a cutaway as the notes go up to the 14+ fret.
Play the Cs2 and pretend its a mandolin and you're playing in some smoky bar ....
LCiphers Notes - ( February 13, 2011)
This is how I like to play "The World You Leave Behind". These are just some notes in a format that I use to help me remember how to play songs (see KEY to the right).
The bpm is either about 74 or 148, depending if you count favoring the vocals or the background rhythm. I never can tell which is right and wind up having to adjust (see below). I actually tap my foot at ~148, so technically the cords are 2x measures instead indicated... but that makes things harder to memorize so I notate it measure-wise as shown.
It's a pretty cool effect that the song's vocals are "slow" but the pace of the rhythm guitar gives it a much faster feel. Try it: sing it solo, then with a guitar. Totally different effect.
Disclaimer - this is provided as an attempt to help others learn this song, it likely violates all rules of music terminology and proper musicology of the highest order! But if it helps out, let me know....
